Cushing House

Built in 1808 and located at 98 High Street in Newburyport, Massachusetts, this building is now the house home of the Historical Society of Old Newbury.

This card is a Postcard United Card.  PCU is a very similar website to Postcrossing, but it features a 3-letter postal code as opposed to Postcrossing's 2-letter postal code, hence why this card is "USA" as opposed to "US".

Elizabeth [future Queen of the United Kingdom] arrives at the 16th century church at Balcombe in Sussex for the wedding of Lady may Cambridge and Captain Henry Abel Smith, on January 1st, 1931.

This card is apparently my first card where the person who sent it has since closed their account on Postcrossing.  The Postcrosser was from Hamburg.  Today is Queen Elizabeth's 90th birthday.

The Polish Nationality Room

From the card: The Polish Nationality Room in the Cathedral of Learning at the University of Pittsburgh contains designs found in Krakow's Wavel Caste.  The 18-foot beamed ceiling reflects the Italian Renaissance influence on Poland.  A portrait of Copernicus and an enlarged replica of the 16th century Jagiellon globe attest to Polish contributions to science.  The windows bear medallions representing institutions of higher education.

Wheelbarrow Workers

This card is one of three sent to me by a postcrosser in Fiji in the South Pacific on a direct swap!  Fiji is a very "rare" country for Postcrossing, so direct swaps are often the only way that a person can get a card from those areas.

Doolittle Raiders Commemorative Goblets

This is a postcard of the Doolittle Raiders Commemorative Goblets display at the National Museum of the United States Air Force.

The Doolittle Raid is named after  Lieutenant Colonel James "Jimmy" Doolittle who lead an air-based raid over Tokyo and the Home Islands of Japan on April 18, 1942.  The raid was the first attack by the US on the Japanese Home Islands and a propaganda victory for the Americans during the early stages of World War II.

The goblets are silver and each one bares the name of one of the flight crew on each of the sixteen planes involved in the raid.  Each vertical volume represents one of the planes.  When one of the raiders dies, the raider's goblet is turned upside down.

When only two raiders are remaining, they are to reunite in Dayton and toast their fallen comrades with a bottle of 1896 Hennessy also on display with the goblets (that being the year Doolittle was born).

This postcard is a bit dated.  It shows, by my count, 17 remaining raiders; however, as of my last visit to the museum in August 2014, only four raiders were still living.  As of February 2016, only two raiders remained alive.
